Iggy’s! What a Starter!

Posted by Shanna on 13 June 2007

I had my first try of proper fine dining few weeks ago….  I was invited for dinner and I chose Iggy’s to be my experience to enjoy exquisite cuisine.  Boy! I was in for a treat!

I wished I had taken the menu with me to describe each dish!  Abit of info on Iggy’s.  I heard its rated No. 60 in the World’s Top Restaurants.  And it’s a big accomplishment for a Singaporean run restaurant.  Chef Dorin is the MAN in the kitchen working his wonders!

There were 2 menus to choose from, a Tasting Menu and another one for vegetarians.  I, of cause, went for the Tasting Menu.  The meal was 8-course, burning my date’s pocket at $175+++ per person!  And we also had a half bottle of wine at $108+++!

I must get hold of the menu!  I know they gave us a green pea soup served in a shooter glass!  We were suppose to down the soup in 1 go!  I was thinking, what’s so fantastic about a green pea soup?  I was really in for a surprise!  The soup was so smooth, gliding down my throat!  The soup was served in 3 temperatures!  The first portion was cold!, the middle level was warm, and the top part was abit hotter and frothy!

All I can remember for now was the wonderful Wagyu beef, Aasparagus, Abalone, Foie Gras and the ‘free-flow’ of truffle oil on the dishes!  Oh Yes!  I have had my first try of shavings of truffle!  Honestly speaking, I didn’t find anything fantastic about this expensive item.  I don’t understand how people can spend thousands to buy truffles.

There was also fresh servings of bread, I did enjoy the olive bread.  I heard that they do not make their own bread, but well, it tastes great!  Who cares?

Anyway, I had  introduced myself to the head waiter and when he knew who I was, I was pleasantly surprised that Chef Dorin came out to speak with me when I was about to leave!

No, I am not anyone famous!  More like my boss is!

Well, it definately was a wonderful experience for me!  I can’t wait to go back there again!

Now where shall I go next?  I think my next target would be St. Julien or St. Pierre!  Would anyone like to take me there? :)

I CAN Cook!

Posted by Shanna on 3 February 2007

I had meant to write this weeks back, but I have been ever so busy that I had totally forgotten to write about  ‘Party for 4: Part 2′!  Actually, its not for 4 people, its more like 5!

I had my usual guinea pigs to try my food AGAIN, and I guess it was pretty successful!  On the menu, Linguine with a choice of cream sauce or algio olio.  Well, thanks to my sister-in-law, she had taught me how to make the cream sauce easily, by just mixing full cream, parmesan cheese and an egg!  The only ‘work’ to be done was to fry the sliced bacon. I actually added some pesto sauce and threw in some of the Aglio Olio sauce into the cream sauce, and it tasted great! The Aglio Olio was a tough one cos I’ve never tried that before, but from my recollection, I threw in what I felt would taste great!  Fried the chopped garlic with butter, threw in the chopped onions, cook til softened, threw in olive oil, threw in sliced button mushrooms, salt and pepper to taste, and Voila!  Of cos, I guess it would be better if I had white wine…..

Vicky had 2 portions of cream sauce pasta and 1 portion of aglio olio, while the rest had their portion of Aglio or cream sauce.  Vicky took my portion cos he said he wanted more, so I actually surrendered my portion to him! Sob sob!  :(   But then, I was really hungry, cos I guess all the cooking made me lose my appetite.  So maybe I should be picking up more cooking!  Then I’d lose weight more!

I have tried cooking Western and Italian, what should I do next?  Maybe Chinese?  Or Malay?  I know!  Beef Stew!  With loads of carrots, potato and onions!  But then, I must think of another dish then…. 1 dish isn’t enough for those pigs!  Maybe a roast chicken?  Should we have rice or french loaf?

I think with comments of me being ‘Motherly’, I think I should start writing a cookbook, or ‘An Idiots Guide to Being A Mother’!  Inside shall have portions of how to look after your kids, how to cook, how to bake, how to do the laundry, how to clean the house….. WAIT A MINUTE!  I don’t even do my own laundry, or even clean the house, even my own room is a total mess!  OK, I think I shall forget about that book, maybe I should….. tidy up my room abit first… then take a photo of it, before and after, AND blog about it!  Hey!  It will be an achievement for me, you know?  Ok, stay tuned to the before and after photos of my bedroom!  (But that may take some time too!:D

Dinner for 4

Posted by Shanna on 8 January 2007

I just realise that preparing a dinner for 4 is a tiring job!  My fren and I had decided to cook for our other 2 friends dinner today.  On the menu, we had salad greens (lettuce, tomato, onions and hard-boiled eggs), smoked salmon with thousand island sauce, followed by rib eye steak with potato salad topped with cavier and my sinful butter cake for dessert!

It doesn’t sound like much but to think that I have been awake since 9am to bring my daughter for her swimming lessons, then to the supermarket to buy potatoes and salad greens, had lunch and then head to my flat to start baking!  That was about 1.30pm by then.

I finished baking and boiling and peeling potatoes by 4pm, head out of the door to pick up a friend to the supermarket to buy the steaks, back to the flat by 5.30pm or so!  I had less than an hour before the other 2 girls came!  So I had to rush to clean up my baking mess, cut the vegetables up, boil d eyes, and finish the preparation of the potato salad, while my friend seasoned the steaks!

By dinner end, I was so full and tired, all I had wanted to do was to slouch with my friends at the sofa, watching TV.  However, I had to wash up dinner plates, pots and pans, cutlery, and to top it off, dry and keep them!  All of us were to full to eat the butter cake til later in the evening….! But it was so worth the wait! Sipping our dessert wine, Muscati, and having a bite of the cake, such a lovely feeling!

Since the dinner party was such a success, I have now promised them Fettecine Carbonara for dinner next time!  Maybe ending with home made Vanilla Ice Cream with Chocolate Sauce!  Or would a sherbet be better?  No matter what, I’ll have better timing next time! :)

Another long day for me tomorrow as I have to complete my pineapple tarts!
